Writing 150

This semester I have learned a lot. I learned what college is like and what BYU is like. Everything this semester is new for me and it is probably the same for many. It is the first time I have been away from my parents and what it is like to live by yourself away from home.
In writing 150 this semester I have learned many new things. I have learned what a rhetorical analysis is. I learned new tools of writing and many big words like proteclepsis (I forget how to spell it) and what logical appeal and emotional appeal in writing was. I learned how to be yourself in your writing and add voice to your writing. Well writing the research paper I learned a lot about the BCS football system well researching that information about the BCS.I learned how to cite different research that I used with different authors. Also in this class I learned about the writing center and how you can take your paper to the writing center for help. I also learned that you should you use your peers for help and peer reviews are very helpful. That there are many things you can learn from others about your writing.
I still need to work on my writing. I feel that sometimes I get very repetitive in my writing. I need to work on rereading my work. Well taking the pretest and posttest I learned that there are a lot of things that I do not know about in my writing that I didn’t know that I need to learn and work on. I also need to work on putting my papers in the right format whether it’s MLA or a different format. This is what I learned this semester and what I still need to work on.

The State of the American Dream

On the Diane Rehm show I  decided to listen to a political one that was called the State of the American Dream. It was about how America has changed and the American Dream is not what it used to be. They were remembering the times when Americans who got a good education and worked hard could make it. Now a days they say even with those things you can't always make it. They say the government is not doing there part in America in order to keep the American dream. Now a days two people in a house hold have to work in order to make a good enough living to support your family and live with some luxuries. The radio talk show is bascially how the American Dream has changed and it not what it was 50 years ago and how the government is doing nothing to help the situation.

My favorite Movie

My favorite movie is Pursuit of Happiness because it shows that anyone can make it in life. That through hard work and motivation anyone can work hard enough anyone can have happiness. The movie is very sad and happy at the same time. In provides me with motivation because I do not want to be homeless and have his situation. I want to work as hard as I can so I can be happy and live a good life with no financial worries. I love the Pursuit of Happiness though because it is a sad but happy movie in the end and Will Smith is a pretty sweet actor.

How my Writing is going?

My writing on my research paper so far is going okay. I like the subject I chose and it interest me a lot, so this makes it easier for me to write about. When researching though it is hard to find sources that are meaningful, because most resources are newspapers and things like that. I am doing well though and its moving along. I know how and what my paper is going to look like now I just have to do the work.

Pros and cons

The topic I chose to do is The debate on whether the BCS should be replaced with a playoff system. The pros to that is it would be more exciting to watch and small schools not in a BCS conference would have a chance for a national championship. A con would be that the school might have to play an extra month of football during college student finals. There are many pros and cons but you could combine BCS and playoff system and still have bowl games as playoff games like basketball has a tournament. They could use The BCS and choose The top 8 teams to do a playoff. This would make college football bigger then the superbowl.

Rhetorical Analysis

When writing my rhetorical analysis it was hard to find a paper I wanted to write on. It was a challenging paper for me to write, because I have never wrote this kind of paper before. When I went to the writing lab they talk to me about my paper and tried to teach me things. But I felt they didn't help that much because they didn't tell me what direction to go with in my paper or how to make it better. I hope I did well on the paper and I hope everyone else does too.

50 words

I didn't really know what to say in 50 words. So I guess I will talk about school. But I'm getting worn out of school. School is picking up and its hard to keep up. I just can't wait for Thanksgiving break because I'm worn out. I have taken test and didn't realize how hard BYU is. But life keeps going.

letter from Birmingham Jail

In the letter from Birmingham jail there were many emotional, logical and ethical appeals. It starts off hitting you emotions by saying my dear fellow Clergymen, which is being emotional. He answers very kind with not my contention and says he wants to answer their questions, which is logical. He talks about non-violence, which is very ethical thing to do and shows emotion that way. He talks about how he is there because there is injustice. So he showing he has ethics this way to sound more believable. He shows a lot of emotion by seeing that he was very polite and cared about things. I like his logic to in the article he sounded logical in what he said. In this writing there were a lot of uses of logic and ethics, and emotional appeal he told what people wanted to hear. It was well used and sounded good in the letter. In the letter he talks about negotiation and doesn’t want to be confrontational. This is very good logic and ethics he uses.

What Christians Believe

The genre of the writing was a religious writing that is a though about each religion. The purpose of this writing was to talk about religion and how things are and came about, and things people believe and why they could be right and why they could be wrong. It could also be to explore how Christianity is the right religion. The central message of the writing is religion and how Christianity could be right and the thoughts about religion and how things are and what religions are. The world’s view of religion is that they don’t like talking about it. But there is a lot of Christian in the world so lots believe in Christianity. Religion is what people use to look for answers. The world believes in many things about religion because there are many religions throughout the world, but usually most of the world will listen and learn about religion. The world believes in a lot of religions and a lot of things to determine how things are. But there are a lot of good thoughts to religion about good and evil came about and why the world is bad. I think if people in the world believe in Christ you either have to believe he is the Son of God like she sad or that Christ was lying and that means he was bad. So you cannot just sit on the fence about that and believe Christ was just a good person. Most of the world doesn’t think like that some believe Christ was just a good person. I like this writing and I like the evidence that atheists think way to simple that it could not be true. Because that would mean we would not exist if you justify that.

Veil of Fears

The Genre is the world culture and it is about a culture war. The purpose of this piece of writing is to set up an argument of what is right for the Afghan culture to do and what is wrong. The message of this article is should Afghan culture and the woman of there culture be treated like they are, in having to wear a veil over there face and things like that. Even though it was part of there culture. The world view and assumptions of this would be that they believe this is very strange and that Afghan woman should not have to wear a veil over there face. Also the world view of there culture makes there culture very strange. It says that in some Afghan tribes woman don't wear veils over there face because everyone is in there inner circle. But then the woman in other places wear the veil because that how it is. It is enforced by the Taliban like that. The Taliban is fading and Afghan woman are gaining more freedom and as they gain freedom does it causes changes in culture. But will the culture ever change.

How my Personal Narrative went!

My personal narrative was hard to write. It took me a while to think of a topic to write about. I couldn't think of a story that really just change my life and taught me a lesson. After much thinking and brainstorming I thought of my childhood and sports in my childhood. That help me think of my story and how I had games on Sunday I didn't play in and set an example for others. In my personal narrative it was hard to think of ideas that needed to be put into the story and what ideas I should use. The read over my writing many times and the peer editing help me with things I should do with my writing. The peer editing also help me by reading others I found out what my writing should be like. I like the writing and the story I came up with and I did my best on it so I think it went pretty well.

Personal Narrative Writing

My personal narrative is going okay. It just tough to write sometimes because it hard to think of parts you need to add to the story. I have a pretty good topic I am writing about it just hard to write and put into words. I have a good begin to my story believe but it hard to add details to make it sound like me, and add voice to my writing. It is also hard organize my writing and to have an ending to it. I always have struggle with this in writing. But hopefully if I keep writing it will come to me.

Response Paper 2

The story Excerpt from Night was a shocking story to me. It really gave me a picture in my mind of the things that went on in World War 2 and how glad I am not to live in that kind of circumstance. I have heard story like this about World War 2 but this just puts these story in to picture and the things that went on. I wonder how I would have acted in that situation what I would have done. Would I pray or what would I do. This story was for interesting to me, because you see what the Jews were doing in this situation and how they were praying and shaking. I have not had an experience in my life where I was this close to death and I was shaking so I don’t know how I would act. This just shows the wrong that was going on in the world with Hitler and how bad the life of Jews were. It definitely made me appreciate my family and my life more, and this story makes me very grateful of the things I have and the place I live. I also I’m glad I haven’t seen the things the author has seen in the story. That they burned people and he had to see that, it made me very angry though and I just wish I could have done something for those people in that time. It is very neat to hear this story of Jews from World War 2 and how fortunate those people are to survive this tragic and terrible thing so we can here there stories.

Response Paper

The story called Lift Up Your Voice in Why Write I thought was very interesting to me on what they said about showing voice in writing. I agree with the author I believe there is voice in are writing and we need to find are voice in writing. In my writing I know I haven’t been the best at having my voice heard in my writing. I just never really knew how to write and I knew if I wrote how I talked it would sound weird. I like in the article how is said that we can hear the voice and know who it is by reading a conference talk and find out who it is and how our writing needs to flow like that. I also like the story about U2 and how we need to be able to recognize are voice in are writing. The evidence of how to write in the article is what the students are saying in the article that we need are voice to be heard. I like in the article how it said “But the problem is that I knew what Walcott was a poet in a million; he had won the Nobel Prize for literature. The Nobel Freaking prize!” I like that line in the book because it showed voice. I also like the quote writing without voice is wooden or dead because it lacks sounds, rhythm, energy, and individuality.” This applies in studies in class right now because we need to show voice in are writing that we write to make the writing seem more alive. The text help me understand how to put voice in writing better, so I can write better papers.
